Revit Family Creation Services

Revit Family Creation Services

The AEC Associates develops custom Revit families for architects, engineers, contractors, and product manufacturers, creating accurate, parametric BIM components tailored to project and product requirements. We build families from product specifications, cut sheets, CAD drawings, hand sketches, and existing 3D models, delivering LOD 100–500 content in .RFA, and IFC formats. We support Revit family creation for clients across the United States, United Kingdom, and the Middle East.

How We Build Revit Families

  • We build each family from the source you provide — specification sheets, cut sheets, 2D CAD drawings, hand sketches, or 3D files — to the Level of Development (LOD 100 to LOD 500) your project requires.
  • We organize family data — type and instance parameters, shared parameters, materials, URLs, and manufacturer information — so the family is ready to schedule, tag, and take quantities from.
  • We build each family with a target file size under 1MB wherever possible, so it stays light inside the model and is easy to share or upload.
  • We deliver in the format your workflow needs: .RFA, or .IFC.
  • For product lines with multiple variants, we build type catalogs (.txt) once the variant count makes that the more efficient approach.
  • We align family naming and classification with standards such as OmniClass, UniFormat, and MasterFormat where the project or manufacturer requires it.
  • We build and test each family in the Revit version your project requires.

Level of Development (LOD) We Work To

LOD What It Covers
LOD 100 Conceptual symbol or mass — used for early design and feasibility
LOD 200 Approximate geometry with general dimensions — used in schematic design
LOD 300 Accurate geometry with defined dimensions — used for construction documents and coordination
LOD 400 Fabrication-level detail with assembly, installation, and fabrication information — used for shop drawings
LOD 500 As-built condition with verified data — used for facility management and asset tracking

Who We Build Revit Families For

Who We Build Schematic Design Packages For
  • Architects & Design Firms — standardized, reusable family libraries that hold up across multiple projects without rebuilding from scratch each time.
  • Structural & MEP Engineers — discipline-specific components built to coordinate cleanly across architectural, structural, and MEP models.
  • Product Manufacturers — DD families that match your actual product — geometry, branding, and specification data — so designers can specify it directly into their models, often distributed as a downloadable catalog from your website.
  • Furniture Designers — parametric, lightweight families for digital catalogs used in space planning and product selection by the A&D community.
  • General Contractors & Fabricators — fabrication-ready families (LOD 400) that support shop drawings and on-site installation.

What You Can Expect From Every Family

Grid of Revit family models — furniture, structural steel, MEP, floor plans, building massing, window wall, and plumbing fittings
  • Family delivered with high quality standards
  • Standard types or type catalogs included where the product line requires them
  • Data organized — types, instance parameters, shared parameters, materials, and URLs
  • Client-requested Level of Development (LOD 100 to 500) built into the family
  • Clean family file — unnecessary geometry and parameters purged before delivery
  • Family built and tested in the Revit version your project requires

Quality Review Process

Every revit family creation services goes through our internal quality system before delivery:

1

Self Check: First check done by the individual against coordination and standards.

2

Peer Review: Next QC executed by peers/team members

3

Supervisory Check: QC by the Project Manager broadly reviewing graphics and technicalities.

This process is backed by the same International quality management system used to deliver all projects at The AEC Associates.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Revit family? ›
A Revit family is the editable file that defines a component's geometry, parameters, and behavior inside a Revit model — such as a door, light fixture, or piece of furniture. When the family is updated, every placed instance updates automatically.
Why are Revit families important? ›
Well-built families ensure consistency, accuracy, and efficiency across a project. Changes update automatically wherever the family is placed, reducing coordination errors and improving scheduling accuracy.
What's the difference between a Revit family and a BIM object? ›
A Revit family is the editable source file. A BIM object is typically the placed instance of that family, often tied to a specific manufacturer's product with attached data.
Can Revit families be customized for manufacturers? ›
Yes. We build manufacturer-specific families using parametric geometry, configurable types, and embedded metadata so your product can be specified directly into a design.
What file formats do you deliver? ›
We deliver in .RFA, or .IFC, depending on your platform and project standard.
Can you build a family from a spec sheet or 2D drawing? ›
Yes. We build Revit families from product specification sheets, cut sheets, 2D CAD drawings, hand sketches, and existing 3D files.
What Level of Development (LOD) do I need for a family? ›
LOD 100–200 suits early design and conceptual use. LOD 300 suits construction documentation. LOD 400–500 suits fabrication and facility management.
